Tene Üprus. Linguistic Accommodation of Estonians in Estonian-Russian Mixed Group Communication

2005, nr. 5

The article introduces a way to demonstrate language change. The case reads: how the Russian accent of the Estonian spoken by some native speakers of Russian living in Estonia might influence the pronunciation of Estonians in mixed group conversation. The research is based on accommodation theory (Howard Giles). The material approximately four hours of recordings comes from a group experiment.
The results indeed show some traces of Russian accent discernible in the speech of three Estonian subjects. The influence was most marked in a close-tied group of two friends.
