Mare-Mai Kõnno. The Introduction of New Original Estonian Literature during 2001–2002 |
2006, nr. 1 |
The article deals with the role of publishers
and editors of literary criticism in introducing new original
Estonian literature into the Estonian literary field. The main
attention is focused on new literary works not reviewed in press.
The most important publishing houses are identified by means of
analysing statistical databases. The activity of editors is observed
by using questionnaires. The theoretical background to the research
comes from Pierre Bourdieu's field theory. Statistics show that
during 2001–2002, 440 Estonian original books of belles-lettres
were published by 193 publishing firms. 46.8% of all books published
within that period were reviewed. Second editions, collections
and debuts were less reviewed. Poetry constituted more than half
of the not reviewed literature. The results indicate that the
potential of a literary work for arriving in the center of the
literary field largely depends on the decisions of publishers
and editors of literary criticism. Backgrounds for those decisions
are investigated.
Keywords: literary sociology, Pierre
Bourdieu, editors of literary criticism, publishing.
