Hendrik Laas (1862–1919) was the founder, editor and publisher of the first Estonian-language agricultural magazine Põllumees issued in Tartu 1895–1912. In 1900 H. Laas started Estonian agricultural workshops in his own experimental farm. The businessman and agricultural figure failed, though, in his attempt to become a leading public figure in Tartu, as he lacked the necessary education, cooperativeness and sense of perspective to qualify anyone for a politician.
